The program was set up in 1992 by the United States Environmental Protection Agency or EPA. The purpose of the program back then was to cut down on the amount of energy that people were using, the more power that was being used the more gas emissions were created by the power plants thereby causing what they call the greenhouse effect.
The specific Energy Star program was developed by a man named John Hoffman he had already created other such programs for the EPA such as the Green Programs at the U.S. The program was set by to show that by reducing the amount of energy we use we could help slow down the process of global warming.
The program first started out as voluntary program that promoted energy efficient appliances and products including computers. In fact the computer products were the first to be labeled as Energy Star. Soon after the success of the computer labeling it quickly spread to other appliances.
The popularity grew very quickly and now even some new homes are being labeled with the Energy Star logo.
